Requirements: Skills & Experiences (will update after receiving JD)

  • Background
    • Customs work: in the middle of tax & supply chain. Defend audits & do consulting: helping them to find better ways to optimize supply chain (which might go down further to implementing systems & ERP)
    • Customs Brokerage (exp in supply chain, dealing with customers) - diamond in the rough
      • Good to have an understanding of supply chain
      • Customs technical knowledge is great but for these ppl, they have no consulting bgs - which takes a while or might not be possible to convert their mindsets to consulting mindsets (this is THE challenge when it comes to industry side)

    • 1: Fully bilingual

    • 2: Native Japanese with decent English

Company (About & Pitch):

  • A branch of a Singapore entity operating under the rules of Japan office. This means more reach and cooperation in APAC.
    • Regional company for this practice in Asia

    • All admin & policy is Japan tax (HR, Payroll etc.)

  • WMS: advise clients on intl trade issues - customs valuation, dealing with trade war, duty rates, deal with customs rather than tax authority

  • Audit isn’t the main part of the work BUT compliance audits are done for clients - split some of the work with audit team (so some accounting bg is good in that sense) & conducts audit defenses

  • Focus: Organization, procedure, structure & development of Customs & Trade: to help get companies to not get stuck in customs, to optimize duties that companies are paying at the moment (esp when they are developing a new supply chain in the future)
    • Business opp: customs has not been something that a lot of Japanese companies have looked into in the past and with the current trade war, timing is good for them to change mindset in company to have more clients focused on customs - duties and customs is a huge area to SAVE cost

  • Team: 7 members now but would like to get to 10 if not 20 (looking to hire 3 this year)

  • Overtime: internal push for work life balance but it’s a work in progress - looking to reduce that by hiring more ppl (40 hrs mthly avg now)

  • Meritocracy & Opps: The more you do, the more that you are able to show that, the more opps for growth and advancement: small team right now so individual contributions are important and looked at (working for an American boss!)

  • Both inbound & outbound - half of work is in English

  • PwC is the best connected with Asia which is where the growth is!

    • PwC WMS has a very strong bond with international team (it is a branch of Singapore entity which shows how strong connection is with the region. Have very strong connection with the US team too)
    • Network = 60+ countries: a lot of the work requires communication with intl network

Document Screening --> SPI Test (online test) --> Translation Test (1.5 hrs online test using a dictionary is fine) --> Interview w/ Director & Snr Mgr
